Clumpers vs. Runners

When choosing bamboo...

It is very important that you are educated and know what kind of bamboo you are purchasing. There are two types of main bamboos, running and clumping. It is easy to distinguish the difference just by the names. The biggest difference between these two is the way the root system works. The roots of clumping bamboo are short and grown close together in a circular pattern, at a very slow rate. The roots of running bamboo are rhizomes that can "run" underground, spreading far and wide at a fast rate.

Clumping Bamboo

Clumping bamboo is recommended for those looking to plant their bamboo in the ground without risk of it becoming invasive and fast growing. If you want easy installation without fear of your bamboo growing into unwanted areas, go with a clumper!

Benefits of clumpers:

  • Noninvasive
  • Low maintenance
  • Grows tall quickly
  • Make excellent specimen plants/ accents

Running Bamboo

If you find yourself in a spot where you need a fast growing and vertical spreading bamboo type, running bamboo is your best option. Running bamboo, also known as runners, can spread fast and maintain that ideal privacy fence.

Benefits of Runners:

  • Fast growing
  • Privacy screen/ hedge wall
  • Cold hardy
